"Willie won't back down to world leaders, because I haven't a clue who they are and I'm not willing to learn."

How can anyone NOT respect a man running for public office that is that darn honest ?

Heck, put him up against Hillary.
We'd all be better off.

Another thing Scotland has in abundance are workshy layabouts who will make an independent Scotland even more of a European nanny state than the UK.

I think they will end up an economic basket case, but I do support the right of self-determination and if Scotland votes for independence I hope it will lend momentum to other independence movements. I'd like to see a few here in the former US.

Unfortunately Scotland consistently votes for left wing parties and is the most anti-gun part of the UK. The standing joke is that there are more giant pandas in Scotland than Conservative MP's.

However, while Scottish independence doesn't offer much hope of making Scotland a freer place to live (see Jim Sillar's recent comments in The Scotsman), it does offer some hope of reforming the rest of the UK by taking the most left-wing MP's in Westminster out of the picture.

If it happens then it's going to hurt both countries (the new Scottish republic and the rUK) in the short term, in more ways than one. Both parties will likely take an economic hit from it, plus there are many on both sides of the border who value the fraternal ties between the two countries and would regret it for that reason alone. However, in the long run it may be worth it.

Ultimately, I do support the right of self-determination for everyone, not because I'm Scottish (I'm not, I'm English) because I value having that right for myself. I'm also glad we're going about this via debate and referendum, not by bullet and petrol bomb.

@Roger C - with no money to pay for socialism, what a better exilor to smelling the coffee and forcing wagon stickers to become wagon pullers out of a sense of survival. I understand the warped view on self defense and guns in Scotland, that was just a bit of my advice for a new free country that might need to challenge their government if they don't come to their senses quickly.. I wish Scotland the best of luck, and would love to see them become a new, very free society, but realize progressives are NOT in the freedom business.. It may be that Scotland is doomed to eat rotton potatoes and haggis!....

@DamDoc,

I hope you're right! It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that a few tough years will cause the Scots to go back to their self-reliant, free market roots. After all, Adam Smith hailed from Scotland, so it's not as if there isn't a tradition there, even if it's presently buried.
